ISRO launches NVS-03 navigation satellite on GSLV-F18

GSLV-F18, the 20th flight of the GSLV, lifted off from the Second Launch Pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, carrying NVS-03 towards a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. NVS-03 is the third satellite of the second-generation NVS series and carries an indigenous atomic clock and a new L1 civilian signal in addition to L5 and S-band signals. NavIC currently has only three working satellites, while four are needed for standalone positioning. After the NVS-02 orbit-raising failure of 2025, ISRO kept the satellite's pyro valves open before launch.

Key facts

  • Launch: 11:51 pm IST, 30 October 2026, Second Launch Pad, SDSC-SHAR Sriharikota
  • GSLV-F18 is the 20th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle
  • Signals: L1, L5 and S band; coverage: India and about 1,500 km beyond its borders
  • Carries an indigenous atomic clock along with procured clocks
  • NavIC needs at least 4 working satellites for standalone positioning; only 3 were working (IRNSS-1B, IRNSS-1I, NVS-01)

Static GK / background

  • NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) was earlier called IRNSS
  • ISRO was formed on 15 August 1969; headquarters: Bengaluru
  • NVS-02 was launched on GSLV-F15 on 29 January 2025 (ISRO's 100th launch from Sriharikota)

Useful for: UPSC, State PSC, SSC, Railway, Banking

UPSC, State PSC, SSC, Railway, Banking
